With a winter advisory warning coming for the Northeast, it’s time to take care of those tasks that have been put off for far too long.
Starting with Ol’ Red, the snow blower from the 1990’s. Older than me, the beast is always a treat to operate. Pushing it up the mountain we call a driveway will get you in shape faster than P90X, CrossFit, and the alternative, an old-fashioned shovel, combined.
Starting her up today went better than expected. The electric start worked just fine, the choke kicked in immediately, and she purred like a kitten. I had to put some air in the tires, though, the ones that spin when you’re going uphill and slide coming back down, which makes for such an enjoyable snow blowing experience.
Another thing to be done is dig through the piles of L.L.Bean boots, jackets, hats, and gloves that have been collected over the last two winters and find the ones I actually like. The generous discount I got when I worked there makes the task harder than you might expect.
There is a certain beauty that comes with the first large storm of the year. A blanket of white stretches out covering the landscape, every sound muffled and soft, and doing doughnuts in parking lots takes on a whole new dimension.
It stays in the front of your mind, however, that every inch that comes down, is going to make it that much longer until golf season arrives.
